What is the Open Science Retreat?

The Open Science Retreat is something between an unconference, a hackathon, a networking event, and a retreat. It’s a chance for the open research community to come together and collectively work out what we need to do next, while also taking a moment to rest and recharge.

Many of us working in open and collaborative research environments face high workloads, fragmented communities, and limited time to step back and think creatively. This retreat serves as a counterbalance — a space to pause the daily rush and focus on the “why” behind our work.

Our goal with the retreat is to create an environment that supports deep thinking, authentic connection, and shared learning. It gives participants the freedom to explore ideas they don’t usually have time for, to exchange knowledge across disciplines and roles, to make new connections, and to feel re-energized in their commitment to open and reproducible research.

By using an unconference-style format and centering care, flexibility, and curiosity, we create a gathering where participants can shape the experience themselves and bring their full selves to the conversation. This matters deeply for the Open Research community. As the community strives for more inclusive, transparent, and collaborative research practices, we also need spaces that support the people doing the work — not just the outputs.

We do try to decenter outputs (compared to a standard academic event or hackathon), but when you bring together a group of motivated people with shared goals and interests, and provide a supportive container for them to connect, exciting things tend to happen!

To get an idea of what kinds of things come from the OS Retreat, check out the outputs of the 2025 collection in this Research Equals Collection, the outputs of the 2024 edition in this Research Equals Collection and the outputs of the 2023 edition in this newsletter.
